The
1987 Education Reforms
In
1987 the Ministry of Education in Ghana introduced a restructured
education system to replace the old British O and A-levels.
The
old system offered six years of primary education, four
years of middle school and seven years of secondary education
before university.
The Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary
School (SSS) reforms have reduced that time to twelve
years, six years in primary, three in JSS and three in
SSS.
The
new SSS reforms have been developed in response to criticism
that, in the past this level of education has been overly
academic and removed from the country's development and
manpower trends.
Mfantsipim
is a Senior Secondary School.

When Rev. W.T Balmer arrived at the school in 1907, the
school had all but ceased to exist. There were no teachers,
staff or a headmaster. However, there were eight students
who had stayed on, determined to get an education no matter
what. He called them 'The Faithful Eight'.
The monument to the left of the assembly hall is dedicated
to these extraordinary young men.
