Inactivity
Is A Killer
If one in 10 journeys in the UK were made by bike, the
NHS could save £250m a year, a study has found.
Currently,
2% of journeys in the UK are made by bike. Researchers
at Cambridge University found that if this rose to 10%,
the UK population would collectively gain more than
a million years of healthy living over a decade, by
reducing rates of inactivity-related illness.
Most
startlingly, the Cambridge study indicates even tiny
lifestyle changes can have major health benefits. It
discovered that if people got on a bike instead for
just five minutes of the average 36 minutes a day spent
in a car, the NHS would see a 5% reduction in illnesses
such as heart disease, diabetes and strokes.

I
couldn't get down to the river banks because there was
a flood warning in place, apparently the River Lea was
expected to break its banks at high tide.
